Monthly Tips
September 2025
TIP 1 Grandparents Day
Here’s a fun fact about National Grandparents Day coming up (the Sunday after Labor Day) – There is a flower designated for the occasion, the forget-me-not. Another fun fact – Wikipedia has an entry about how different countries celebrate it, and the United States portion of it is several times longer than any other country (at the time of this publication).
To help ensure we’re not forgetting our grandparents, we’ve come up with ways to celebrate during Grandparents Day in our latest blogpost – “Make Grandparents Day Special”.

TIP 2 Temporary ABLE Account Benefits Made Permanent
ABLE accounts are a great tool to help those with special needs, because saving in these accounts will not adversely impact government benefits. For those that care for a special needs child or adult, the tax bill signed on July 4th made some welcome changes by making permanent some of the 2017 enhancements to ABLE accounts. Provisions such as the ABLE-to-Work, so eligible individuals with disabilities can make extra contributions, tax-free rollovers from 529 plans into ABLE accounts, and the Saver’s credit eligibility are now permanent (plus the Saver’s credit contribution limit is increasing to $2,100 starting in 2027).
ABLE accounts are a welcome start; however, having a special needs child or adult to care for means providing emotional, financial, physical, and logistical support. Managing all that sometimes can be done in the family, and sometimes needs outside support. Not all trust departments or trust companies provide the service of administering special needs trusts; it requires specialized expertise and dedication. Garden State Trust Company is proud to provide this as one of our core services, and we have ties with local providers that have years of experience helping special needs individuals. We’d be pleased to share our experience.

TIP 3 Life Insurance Awareness Month
Did you know that September is Life Insurance Awareness Month? According to the Life Insurance Marketing and Research Association (LIMRA), just 29% of consumers believe they are knowledgeable about life insurance. Here’s a fact sheet they’ve put together for 2025.
Life insurance isn’t just about aging with dignity after the passage of a spouse, it’s about providing a substantial financial resource so that important goals are not interrupted upon the passing of a wage earner. It can also mean peace of mind for spouses and loved ones, and more time to focus on grief.
