Monthly Tips
June 2024
TIP 1 Most Impersonated Companies
Scammers can and will impersonate anyone to try to separate people from their hard-earned money—an IRS agent, public utility personnel, even pretending to be a child or grandchild. It’s not just people they impersonate either, it’s also being representatives of companies. The FTC has just released a list of those companies that are most often impersonated, and it can be found here, along with additional information on what to watch for.
The top company being impersonated was Best Buy (or Geek Squad members from Best Buy). The next most impersonated is Amazon followed by PayPal. Scammers are succeeding in bamboozling people on the phone, via email, and even via social media.
The most often reported payment with a scam is through gift cards, so if a vendor is asking you to pay with a gift card, be wary!

TIP 2 Father’s Day
Father’s day for 2024 is coming up. Here’s a bit of trivia to share –
The special day was first celebrated by Sonora Smart Dodd on June 19, 1910. She pushed hard to get fathers a day of their own to be celebrated, and it caught on over the years beyond her community. The day was pushed informally by presidents Woodrow Wilson and Calvin Coolidge, and then in 1966 president Lyndon Johnson signed a proclamation declaring the third Sunday in June to be Father’s Day. In 1972, President Richard Nixon signed a law to allow for permanent recognition of Father’s Day.
Garden State Trust Company thanks the fathers of this great country for their contributions and hopes to celebrate them well. If ever in doubt, remember or share this quote from Charles Wadsworth –
“By the time a man realizes that his father was right, he has a son who thinks he’s wrong.”

As technology grows, it affects all things. It even affects how we cope with one of the most difficult pains of being human, the passing of our loved ones. Read a little bit about new remembrance and bereavement technologies, along with one of the best ways to give loved ones the time and space they need to cope, in our latest blog post, Bereavement and Remembrance.
